David Sanderson is Professor of Tectonics and Geomechanics in the School of Civil Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton. His main technical areas of interests are in tectonics, tectonophysics and geomechanics.

David is a former Professor of Geophysics at the University of Southampton (1989-1998) and HH Read Professor of Geology at Imperial College (1998-2007). He has published over 130 scientific papers and a recent book on distinct element modelling of deformation and fluid flow in fractured rock. He is currently on the editorial board of the Journal of Structural Geology and is a former editor of this journal. He is Chair of the Education Committee of the Geological Society of London.

His current research is mainly into faulting, fracturing and fluid flow, with applications in the hydrocarbon, minerals and engineering industries. He has consulted on fracture-related projects for the hydrocarbons, nuclear waste and minerals industries, has taught courses in fracture characterisation and modelling for these industries.

He is also associated with the Exploration and Production Technology division of BP in Sunbury, where he is involved in the development and integration of research in structural geology and geomechanics.
