From the Centre to the Threshold

You have practised. Now the question you have been avoiding: what is your life actually organised around?
This is the volume that takes the reader to the point where what has been clouding perception can be seen clearly — and then says honestly what lies beyond that, and why no technique reaches it.
The earlier volumes dealt in practice rather than belief. They taught observation, transformation, and forty days of work in ordinary life. If you have done that work, something has changed — not necessarily your virtue, but your clarity.
This volume begins there, and it does not comfort.
What the book addresses
- The centre — what your life is organised around, and the promise attached to it.
- The rent it charges — what it has already cost you, in decisions, in people, and in your body.
- The complaint — why your longing is not evidence that something is missing.
- What stands in the way — attachment, comparison, resentment, certainty, and fear.
- What you actually love — as distinct from what you would like to love.
- The self at the centre — the position, rather than the person, that has to loosen.
- The threshold — what lies beyond clarity, and why no technique reaches it.
Who this is for
- Readers who have worked through the earlier volumes and want to know where the path actually leads.
- Anyone who has understood a great deal and changed very little, and would like to find out why.
- People who would rather be told the truth about a limit than given a technique that does not work.
- Readers of any faith, or of none — the vocabulary of several traditions appears here, and none of it is required.
Place in the programme
This is the fourth volume, and it comes last in the sequence on purpose. It assumes the reader has done the work of the earlier books. Nothing in it depends on that, and a reader arriving early will still recognise what is described — but it is written for someone who has already begun to see clearly, and who is ready to be told what stands beyond that.
