A proposition the reader may consider

You have done the work. Now the harder question: what was it all for?

This is the volume that examines what lies beyond the point where you can finally see clearly — and says honestly what no book, including this one, can reach.

This book is an attempt to ask that question properly. It begins with the origin of everything, because that is where the question leads, and it ends with a practice so small it can be performed in a single breath, because that is where the answer has to be lived. In between it examines the evidence for a beginning, follows the trace backwards from the human being to the first appearance of information in matter, weighs the two possible readings of the whole arrangement, and sets out a proposition — stated plainly, with its difficulties attached.

Three commitments govern the book, and they are set out at the front:

  1. It is a discussion, not an assertion.
  2. It is not a prophecy. No revelation, no authority.
  3. The practice does not depend on the conclusion.

What the book examines

  • The boundary
  • The trace backwards
  • The two readings that genuinely disagree.
  • The proposition
  • What it means for a human being
  • The anchor

Who this is for

  • Readers who have worked through the earlier volumes.
  • Anyone who has found that something still remained unsatisfied.
  • People who would like to be told the truth about the limits.
  • Readers of any faith, or of none.

It is not a prophecy

There is something rather than nothing; whether this is accident or expression cannot be determined from inside; and the work of becoming human is available either way.

Place in the programme

This is the fifth and last volume, and it is last on purpose. It assumes the reader has done the work of the earlier books — the understanding, the transformation, the forty days of practice. Nothing in it depends on that, and a reader arriving directly will still recognise what is described. But it is written for someone who has begun to see clearly and is ready to be told what stands beyond that.
